These are some pictures that I am going to be painting in the near future. Phyl, please give me some advice. I have already sketched the seagull and the wagon onto a board, but I think it would be better to paint the entire background first and then do the detail in the front, rather than trying to paint around everything. Am I correct?

  1. Yes, I would definitely do the background first and I would probably paint right over my sketch with the background. I'd keep the background paint thin, probably let it dry for a few days, then do the subject matter over the dry paint--resketching if necessary--and using somewhat thicker paint.

    And I would probably edit the background chicken and the fence out of the painting and do just a "portrait" of the rooster on the plank. But you're the artist so maybe your vision is different than mine. I often use my artistic license and change reality to fit my view of the way things should be.
